Arthur John Patrick Dooley

IRISH GUARDS

REQUEST FOR INFORMATION

Hi Ivor,

I hope you and/or your visitors can help.

I'm looking for information on ARTHUR JOHN PATRICK DOOLEY - better known later as an outspoken Liverpool sculptor.

He was born in 1929 and died in 1994.

Due to a fire at his property in Woolton in the 1970's, most of his records were lost.

I have no idea of his army number or rank.

So far I have discovered :

He joined the Irish Guards in 1945, aged 16, as a piper.

I can assume he was in the first battalion.

He left in 1953.

I think he was a Sergeant and there was an anecdote where he lead his men down, and back out of a subterranean loo.

He his alleged to have stolen a tank or did some gun running with the PLO

He was given three years in the glass house for this, but got time off for good behaviour according to his 1970 appearance on "This Is Your Life".

Sgt Dooley next to the Priest

He was under the influence of Father Casey and became a Roman Catholic
and also joined the Communist Party.

I have recently discovered correspondence between Dooley and Father Casey and also Father Sydney  (Lisher / Lesher?) and Dooley may have known or served under Major Paddy Mercer.

Piper Dooley - next to the drum

I was wondering if anyone can fill in the gaps in Dooley's army career for an archive that we are creating of his life, which will result in an exhibition in October 2008 in Liverpool.

Best regards
