Hello Ivor
I found your
Web Site very interesting as I served in the Irish
Guards from 1947- 66 and came to Canada in May '66. I met up with an ex-Mick by
the name of Charlie Blackwood (2719168} and we remained very close friends until his
death on 10th December 2001. Charlie joined the micks in 1939 and served
with them throughout the war in Italy, France and the Middle East. He was
wounded in Bologne in 1940. He was at the 'Bou when Kennealy won his VC and when
ever we got together, all we talked about was 'the Micks'. Charlie was born in Canada
in Kelowna, B.C. and left to go to UK when he was 19 yrs old. He married a
Northern Ireland lady and they had just the one daughter. His wife passed away
about 6 yrs ago. Many a hunting and fishing trip he took me on every year and
really showed me what Canada was all about. Although he was 11 yrs my senior, he
was a hard man to keep up with and he always 'set the pace' and there wasn't an
obstacle he couldn't cross or hold him up, he was a true soldier and a fine
leader, I shall dearly miss him. I shall keep in touch Ivor and send some more
photo's , you may remember me as I was also Anti/Tank Platoon 1948 - 53 and fired
the 17-pndr at Lulworth Cove too ! We had the 6-pndr when we were in Windsor 1950
and upgraded to 17-pndr's in Germany in 1952.
