As you can see, in the back row, second from the right, I was in Sgt.Macnay's Squad at The Guards Depot, Caterham in May 1944.
I joined the regiment in early 1944, and after Caterham, went to Bovington R.A.C. camp for tank training as a Driver mech. Then joined the Guards Armoured Division. We were near Cuxhaven when the war finished, not far from Hamburg of course.
Later, in civilian billets in Gross Konigsdorf near Koln (Cologne), after the fraternisation ban was lifted, we ran a transit camp from there, doing short leaves to Paris, then Brussels and after that Kolding in Denmark.

I came back to England and went to a camp in Braunton, North Devon, where the second picture was taken. It is of No.2 Company, 2nd.Batn. Irish Guards, Guards Armoured Division, and we were attached to the 34th amphibian Marines to make a film which was to be used for instruction purpose for Brass hats.

We spent about nine months there.  Listed as a special squad, we had quite a good summer, particularly when  we weren't filming.

I was demobbed from the Tower of London in September 1947.

"I remember those short leaves in Brussels and Kolding . . ."

If this brings back memories for you . . .

Bert sent this to me very recently - It was taken in the Hamburg Barracks
