The Home Guard
and
Remembrance Sunday

http://www.bbc.co.uk/southerncounties/history/cenotaph/home_guard.shtml

Did you know that until last year 2002
the Home Guard had never been represented at the Cenotaph?
I am trying to increase last year's turnout of 15 members , by organising a larger
Home Guard  contingent for this years parade.
I shall seek the support of
The Royal British Legion to get as many men (and women) as possible who served with the Home Guard during the war to walk past on Remembrance Sunday 2003. Indeed anyone in a wheelchair wil also be welcome.

Forgotten Army ?
I share a joke with Jimmy Perry of Dad's Army fame (right), and (centre) Jim Deboo O.B.E who marched with us on Remembrance Sunday 2002, but we were all very disappointed that the BBC did not mention the Home Guard, or include any pictures of them, in their coverage of the event, which was unique this year for the reasons stated above, especially as most of the units which were mentioned have already been referred to in all previous BBC broadcasts of the Remembrance Sunday parades.
In an E-mail feedback from the BBC they have said that " it was not an editorial decision to miss the Home Guard out of the coverage", and adding that "It is almost impossible to predict who will be in front of our cameras during a march past of 10,000 veterans"

Michael Burkenshaw says:
I've started the ball rolling for this year by telling the British Legion that I am organizing "The Home Guard Association" and intend to take a much larger contingent to the Cenotaph. Hopefully one which the BBC will not miss. All former Home Guards will automatically qualify for the association.
If you were in the Home Guard and would like to join us in London.
