Re:Cpl Ferrars Squad
Caterham - 1940

"Behind
the back row, all on his own, is our Trained Soldier-Gough,
looking to my aged eyes as a very young TS, and next
to him on his right our PT instructor, who rumour has
it that he was the heavyweight boxing champion of the
British and Commonwealth Armies.
I got in touch with a particular pal this morning-Joe Brown-in the middle of the
bottom row of the squad photo. (Click on it to enlarge)
It's strange looking back after all these years. I
finished up in the 2nd Batn., as the electrician in No.1 Squadron, but the only other
person in the 2nd was Harold Beckwith that I remember. He became a Troop
Sergeant in No. 1 Squadron.
After the Battalion handed the Shermans in I
carried on looking after all the other vehicles, and we spent our last months
delivering coal and bread to the German population. I was demobbed in Group 32
officially in September 1946, after six years and three months in the
Micks.
It's interesting that so many Manchester men served
with the Regiment. My mother's milkman, and the insurance agent from the
Brittanica were among them, though the latter was killed at Anzio. Many of us joined the Manchester branch afterwards,
and six of us, plus wives, still meet every three months or so for a meal. Very
lucky people, all of us wounded at one time or another."
