Mick's Desert Air Rescue Service

This photograph was taken on the Desert Drive. The names, as I remember them are,
from L to R: Doc Trinder, L/sgt Hamilton, Billy Purdon, Fenlow, Pongo Waring, Spindlow,
Gdsn Hamilton, Tommy Lally, John Singleton, Joe O'Doherty, Peter Mulrennan,
and Geoghan (Major Eugster's orderly)
John Singleton who is standing between Tommy Lally and Joe O'Doherty in the photo, was a first class driver who I think transferred to the REME later in his service. He was driving our 3-ton truck on which we carried about 200 jerricans of water.  I don't think we had a puncture during the whole trip, but seem to remember that all three spare wheels carried by us were brought into use by other trucks.   Peter Mulrennan

Bill Sharp wrote: Hi Ivor, the picture was sent to me by Peter Mulrennan, it was taken on a Battalion exercise out in the desert in 1948, I was just 18 yrs. old at that time. 'Doc' Trinder was a L/Cpl in the M.I. Room assisting the M.O. and was renowned as the best 'medic' the Bn. ever had. Peter and I were just just swapping yarns and snaps and he sent me this photo with the 'Doc' on it plus another 'Mick' who died about 4 yrs ago, a  Joe O'Doherty. In fact Joe's wife Pam, passed away a few weeks ago, Owen Rice (who supplied the photo above) sent me her photo and obituary.

Peter has E-mailed me from Australia:
IVOR,  " I'm back home again for a bit of  R & R  before the next session of Chemotherapy in about 3 weeks time.I served in the Micks from 1946 to 1968.  My rank in Tripoli was L/Sgt, but  CSM when I finished in 1968 and came out to Western Australia whilst still on Demob Leave. During my service I was involved with the Battalion Shooting Team and also had 3 years  secondment to the King's African Rifles in Kenya. There is an article published in the Irish Guards Journal 2003/04, page 8,  in which I mention the Desert Air Rescue Service.  My initials by the way are P. G. and not P.C as shown in the Journal. I will dig out some old photos which may interest you, PETER
