Hi Ivor, I got your email address from Frank Duffy when I contacted him regarding My Grandfather who was an Irish Guardsman during WWII. He suggested I contact you when I get some photos, which I now have. I was trying to find out more about him. Guardsman Thomas Kane 2720554 No.4 Coy, 1st Batn.Irish Guards. Joined April 6th. 1940, discharged January 19th, 1946. My Mother has his medals (4 brass and 3 silver). 1939-45 Stars for Africa, Italy, France and Germany. George VI Defence Medal 1939-45, George VI Empire Star, Effecient Service Medal. We think he was captured in Anzio, but later escaped with a mate on motorcycle, so my mother tells me. I will find out his name if she knows. His brother Bernard was also a Guardsman 2693791 who was apparently wounded in action and dragged out of some spot by his brother, Thomas. Bernard I think was huge and Thomas was somewhat smaller. Thomas stirred him for years afterwards, bemoaning his weight. Not sure where this happened. I have 2 photo's of Thomas Kane 2720554: One a portrait (left) and one a Squad photo from 1940 in good detail with all the names etc. which can be enlarged by clicking on the small one on this page |
Their Father (Thomas Kane Snr.) was a Scots Guardsman in the late 19th century, we have the original discharge parchment (No 107.) (unfortunately spelling his name incorrectly), which I have scanned at high resolution. I also have an old copy (damaged a bit) of Thomas Kane Snr. with an old Scots Guards' Tug-o-War team. |
