Michael Kay has sent me this request
I am in the process of writing a semi biography and I would like to find out a few more facts about my Grandfather who was Major Henry FitzGerald. I did in fact know him [known by all as Fitz] and when I was young I often stayed at his home 'School House' at the entrance of Tonbridge public school where, after leaving the military, he worked as a music teacher and looked after the school band. [He spent a lot of time composing military march music but I do not know what happened to any of it]
I believe that he was playing golf and also billiards possibly with his military colleagues and also his friend Sir Arthur Conan Doyle[mo jokes about Sherlock Holmes and Houdini! please]
I also believe that his medals were presented to the regiment following his death.
I would therefore be very grateful if you could put any further light upon him including his achievements and associations.
If you can help let me know and I will pass on you information

Sir : Being retired from the governor generals foot gurads I came across your ad on the internet, and would like to say: a job well done. We guards should stick together. Just some information on myself, I now am 63 yrs old, taught drums in the foot gds at the age of 16yrs old, proudly wore the parade uniform , and training uniform, almost a sniper but was on standby if needed. I have been on duty to guard the Governor General of Canada . What a day, rain, snow sleet and hail but being a guardsman we never backed down. Do you have a pipe band or brass band, and i would like to know if you would have an old forge cap, size 6 & 7/8 if you are going to throw out old caps or an Irish Gd badge. Please let me know if you have a cap - I will put you in touch |

Hi, I am looking for any information on my Grandfather Eric George Robinson. He was born 13/2/1902 in Sutton, Surrey and I imagine he joined up between 1918 and 1923. He was a corporal in the Irish Guards by January 1924, living in South sea, Portsmouth at the time. He was still living in South sea in December 1926 but by then he was a Sergeant. By 1931 he had left the Guards and had become a Prison Oficer in Winchester, Hampshire. He died in 1954. Did anyone know him, or have any information about him please? 2716599 | I am trying to find out information about my Grandfather who died in the 1950s. In 1931 he was a guardsman aged 22 stationed at Victoria Barracks Windsor. He was promoted to Sergeant at one time. My mum thinks he was stationed at Palestine for a few years. He was married but his wife was working as a domestic servant as they had no married quarters and he was away. My mum did visit the records office once and it says he was mentioned in despatches, but he was too young for the first world war, so it must have been the second. He died about 1954 I think. Any information would be greatfully received. His wife was Mary Murphy, they did get quarters at one time in Corsham, Wiltshire. Yours sincerely, Bernadette Farrell |

Patrick Martley |
Can you help me please to find out anything about my father, I realize that anyone who would have known him would now be extremely old, although I am encouraged by the e-mail from Bob Wilton of Warrington on 2/3/08.
He was Patrick Martley from Widnes, Lancs (tho' now Cheshire!). He was in the guards before the war, when my mother met him in London in 1936. I'm not sure of his exact age, but I think he would have been about 26 when the war started. He served throughout the war - I know he was in North Africa and Italy, and towards the end of the war he was very proud of getting his parachutist badge - so I presume he was probably parachuted into Europe. My mother always believed the war killed him. In 1945 he was a patient in Princess Alexandra's Military Hospital in Horley, Surrey. Unfortunately he died in 1947, after discharge from hospital - which my mother told me was common practice at the time, so the widows could not claim a war pension!
I would appreciate any advice you can give for me to find out more about him, I do not even know his Service No. or exactly where he served. I dont suppose anybody will know him, they would have to be a good age - but miracles do happen.
All best wishes,
Pat Vickers (nee Martley)

My father was Phillip Ernest Gates. Unfortunately I don't have his service number.
My father was sent out to Germany when the Irish Guards were going into the Camps. He wasn't born until 1926 so obviously wasn't enlisted until the very latter part of the War. He didn't talk much about his war experiences and I am wondering how to find out which Camp the Guards were sent to. After that dad was sent to Palestine as part of the British Mandate. Both these experiences had a profoud affect on him for the rest of his life.

| Tim Ffrench-Mullen | Lietenant | He had a brother in the Irish Guards called Anthony Ff-M who I believe was a POW and fell out of a plane onto a pile of potato peel and survived. I wonder if anyone remembers that incident ? |

Wallace Hart |
I am currently researching my family tree. My father
died in 1943 whilst serving with the Royal Fusiliers. I have learnt from others
that he was a member of the Irish Guards prior to this. I don't have the exact
dates but I do know he was in Egypt at the time of King Farouk of Egypts wedding
in 1938 and would have left prior to 1940 when I have a photo of him in the
Royal Fusiliers.

Wallace Wynn Willaims |
L/Sgt | 2724970 | Neil Cooney write: I would be grateful if you could help me locate or put me in contact with anyone who may have knew him or served with him. His name was Wallace Wynn Williams (Bill Williams)
He served in Mortar Platoon, Support Company 1st Battalion from 18th August 1944 to 5th Sept 1952 when he returned to his home town of Liverpool
He was in Palestine from Feb 1947 until May 1948 before going to Tripoli in August 1948 to Sept 1949 (my mother was born in Tripoli)
He then served in BOAR from Feb 1951 to July 1952, I think he was stationed at Düsseldorf because my uncle was born there!
Again, thank for creating this wonderful site, I know my granddad would have loved it, sadly he passed away in 2004 but was still a 6' 2" Mick who always made you feel like you had to stand to attention when he was talking to you.
Kind Regards
Neil Cooney |
