I pop in from time to time to see your father's site. My father also served
with the Micks - 3Bn - during WWII and I had just printed some bits and pieces
for him to see.
I am so sorry to hear about your father's death.
My condolences to you and your family.
Sincerely,
Diane
I also appreciate that you are keeping your father's site up and running. It is
a mine of information, and I personally know that it helped one person find a
photo of his relative who died in 1945.
Many thanks.

The reason I was browsing this website via ex forces, was that I at the moment
I belong to an RAF Association local branch & like many others they are
gradually closing down & I wondered in order to keep the comradeship
etc.going could I get mixed services branches together. It's just something I'm
thinking about at the moment but not yet sure just where to start - anyone any
ideas?

Dear Ivor,
I have just found your Irish Guards site, and I found it very interesting
reading the pages and looking at the photographs.I am the secretary of the
Guards Household Division Association Warrington Branch and we have a few ex
Micks amongst our members. Sgt Geoff Hare, and Guardsman Denis Wild. Geoff was
in the last war and took part in 'Market Garden', and Denis served later and
passed out in July 1953.His Squad Sgt was Sergeant Woodham, and I am wondering
if anyone knows anything about him, so that I can pass on the details to
him.Another ex Irish Guardsman I know is Sgt Stan Hill from Manchester who
served in the 3rd Battalion in the last war.

HI
Love the site, first time I have visited. Found it by accident as looking for a
book for my dad to which I have had no luck! Anyone know where I can purchase
The first hundred years of the Irish Guards? I had ordered it from Tesco
online but they are having trouble with new stocks.
Does anyone remember a Douglas(Dougie) Burns from Belfast? He worked and lived
for horses, we lived in Germany, Aldershot and London. He was 70 in November
last year.
Will be back again for another look and when my dad next visits will show him
your site.

Have recently found my late fathers regimental number and
discovered that he was a regular reservist until 1962. Dads
trade was MT and he was also a boxer. I believe he had a
good friend called 'Mally', but that is as much info as I
have. Hope somebody out there remembers him. Thanks for the
site, very informative and always worth a visit - keep up
the good work

just finished reading book on the Somme called The Somme,
by Martin Gilbert.
I read a peice where Prime Minister Asquith was visiting
the Somme. While there, he took the opportunity to visit
his son, 2nd Lt. Raymond Asquith who was attached to the
Grenadier Guards of the Guards Division. Guards Division
were to attack the Germans at Ginchy on September 12th,
1916.
Per the book... "Although the Guards division assault had
not been 'entirely successful', two days later the Irish
had turned it into a 'successful operation.'
These were bland words with regard to a fierce
fight..."
Two days later was September 14th 1916.
I knew my great Uncle Tom was in the Somme but had never
committed the days to memory.
So, the itch to know got the better of me.
Reading thru Thomas Walshs' records, he was wounded on the
Somme, Sept 14th 1916.
He received a gun shot wound to his front chest.
He also received a shrapnel wound to his back; left lower
lumbar.
This was after 2 years and 46 days of active service since
August, 1914.
Pretty impressive to have lasted that long.
Ginchy on the Somme was his last battle until he was called
up again in April 1918.
In between, he was in the 3rd battalion reserves as a light

My late father John James (Jim) Whewell was in the Irish
guards in the mid 1950's. He spoke very often of his time
in Egypt and spent some time as a boxer.
We only have one photo of him in his dress uniform -
wondered if any old mates might be able to provide any more
info/pictures.
Dad came from Toxteth Park in Liverpool. I'm so sorry I

Hi Ivor, just popped in to view the "New Guest Book". Iam
sure it will be as successful as the old one. The IG
Singers have been invited by the MOD to sing in London on
Veterans Day, which is Wednesday June 27th, The following
night, thursday, we are giving a concert at the Royal
Hospital for the Chelsea Pensioners. It should be great
few days.
It is nice to see young Danny Riccio keeping in contact,
his Dad Les, and Mum Peggy are old acquaintances of mine,
please ask him to give them my best wishes.

Hello Ivor
Just to let you know Ivor, I met up with my old mucker
Ciaran Crone the other week. We hadn't seen each other in
eight years.
We served together in the Micks as you well know. He's in
good form and has a lovely family. A lovely wife Julie and
the Mini Micks Jake and Charlie. We all hit it off great
guns.
We decided that we will never leave it that long again
before we see each other again. A visit to Ireland is
planned soon to see my mucker/brother in the very near
future. Summer or sooner.
Thanks ivor, Wishing you and your family all the very best.

| Looking for members of the Guards who fought in and around Nijmegen Salient and at the so called "The Island" September 1944/1945 |
| I enjoyed the webb site immensley. My father was a
Mick. Frank Heaton. He had very fond memories of his time in The Micks. I know
he was a Bren Gun carrier and was in the Guards armoured division. I do have his
army papers which I must get out and find his army number. He was a prisoner of
war having been captured after the fighting around the area of Joe's bridge. And
spent the remaining time of the war in a Stalag in Leipzig. They were liberated
by the Russians. He was repatriated to England after the war but, unfortunately
had developed TB whilst in the prison camp. He spent 7 years in a sanatorium in
Liverpool. During his spell of hospitalisation The Micks visited Liverpool. My
Father wrote to Brig. Mills Roberts telling him how disappointed he would be at
not being able to see the lads. The Brig arranged for the band to entertain my
father and other patients in the grounds of the hospital. My fathers' brother was
also in the Micks, Ray Heaton. Unfortunately both of them have now passed away.
I would love to know more about the fighting at Joe's Bridge and the
circumstances of my father's capture.I know my Father revisited the area with
The Irish Guards Association. It was nice for me to see Fionn the mascot I remember being allowed to stroke and cuddle him when the Micks visited Liverpool. I also have very fond memories of Cannon Casey. He was such a lovely man and an absoloute gentleman with an infectious sense of humour. He would visit my father at home and spend time talking about The Micks. |
| Have seen the photos of me on your web page a few of the lads i served with. I remeber Danny Ricco. Am still serving in the Micks. I had the great pleasure along with my two brothers last year of Escorting the Colour on last years Troop. It was also the first time that the Battalions new Battle Honour was displayed in public. | A fine website, very thorough! I was just idly looking for any reference there might be to my grandfather, CSM Cochrane, who was a pre-WW1 member of the Regiment and who was wounded at Mons, 1914, died of his wounds 29 Feb 1920, also a contemporary of his, Gdsmn Gilltrap, later batman to Col Dingley. |
| My name is Tony McGinty and i was in the Micks from
1960 to 1970, and i boxed with the famous Micks boxing team. Also i was bearer party of 'Field Marshal The Earl Alexander' of Tunis KG also i was one of the two Guard's men who done escort to the colour's on the Queen's birthday parade 1969 'Trooping of the Colour'. Ive plenty more to talk about! |
| Served in the Band from 1969 -1983 including Boy
service and Kneller Hall. Just wondering who is still around. I moved to the States in 1998 and now live near Charlotte North Carolina. Would be great to hear from anyone that remembers me and find out where everyone else ended up. I know we are scattered across the globe now. |
A Happy New year to"To All Micks" old&new a Happy New Year |

Wsa sent overseas again Aug. 1944 retruned unfir Jan. 1945. The MOD has lost his records following commission I have copies of all Micks service. there is the 'Shot at Dawn' memorial in memory of those who were executed by

| Hi Ivor and thank you for a wonderful
website. I'm wondering if anyone out there can help me with my search for my maternal grandfather. We don't have many details on him and what we do know is mainly second and third hand information which may or may not be true. We have been told that he was in the Irish Guards at the start of WWII. He was apparently absent without leave at the end of 1942/early 1943. He vanished without trace early 1943. He might have been born in County Cork and his name was John or Jack Burke. As far as we know he wasn't married to my maternal grandmother (although the story goes that he could have been married to someone else!) and he and my grandmother had 3 children born in 1938, 1940 and 1943. If anyone out there has any information or ideas on my grandfather I would be very grateful. Regards Tina |
| Thanks for a gleaming site.Ex Mick with some great memories |

| Hello Ivor Just watched you telling the tale on the UK History Channel regarding your boy service with the Home Guard before you joined the Micks when you became old enough. It was a brilliant program and you certainly showed your breeding when you did that bit of drill at the end, typical Irish Guardsman. Well Done mate John |
| Dear Ivor, I was wondering if you could help me. My Grandfather, Norman Bird, served as a guardsman with the 1st Bn Irish Guards in North Africa in WWII. He was killed on the 3rd May 1943 and is buried at Oued Zarga War Cemetry in Tunisia. I wondered if any of the visitors to your website remember him. His number was 2720899 and he was from Horsfirth in Yorkshire. My grandmother did not really like to talk about the war years and has since passed away. As a result neither I or my father know much about what happened to him. Many thanks Matt Bird |

| Hello, My father was an Irish Guardsman in WWII, at Norway, holland ,North Africa and Anzio where he was captured. I emigrated to Australia some 30 years ago, but would love to know the full service history of my dad, especially for his grandkids. I lost his service medals when I was a kid, is there somewhere or someone who can help with any of this? I do have his pay book and service No, also a newspaper article of him in Norway with 2 germans prisoners being walked at bayonet point. A few pics of him to, and please , I should know( son of a Mick),but what does the motto stand for/ mean? His name was William richard Copple from Cheshire/Liverpool. yours Bill Copple |

| Hi Ivor, Just updating on your fantastic site
again. Could Emma Gunby of the Liverpool Echo be the same Emma Gunby I treated
as a patient as a child? It's a small world! Hope you are well and over your op. Take care, Gerry |
| I should just like to add my tribute to all the
others who have praised this brilliant website. Although I did serve in the army
for 3 years from 1957 it was not in the Brigade of Guards: my interest results
from a family connection. I have a keen interest in the 2nd.Armoured Bn. Irish Guards resulting from my research into the circumstances of my uncle's death in action whilst serving with that formation. I have carried out quite detailed research and established the exact time, place and circumstances of my Uncle Robert Riches's death which was shortly after dawn on 1st.August 1944 just south of St.Martin des Besaces in Normandy. He was a lance sergeant and was killed with 2 other Sherman tank crew members by a Tiger tank from ambush. I have visited his grave 2 years ago and will be returning to the battle scene on the 60th.anniv. ( this August ). Naturally, I should be delighted to hear from anyone with a similar interest or involvement. Good luck. MALCOLM |
| A Great Site. |
| Ivor, Thank you so much for forwarding Kevin Mullins e.mail. His father, Albert, served with my Dad, Jerry, in the Battle for Anzio Beachead and was captured with him, they both ended up as POW's in Germany. Albert refers to my Dad in his diary. A very interesting piece of information. Another example of how your efforts bear fruit! Please keep up the good work. All the best, Jonathon Dempsey |

| Hello, I am starting a search for my Paternal
Grandfather's brother who served in the Irish Guards sometime from the late 1920's. His name was Jack Byrne and he came from Dublin to live in London where he joined up. I don't have any other information apart from the first line of an address 'Electron Buildings' that my Dad remembers family members writing to Jack at. | My Grandfather John Maguire (Born in Co Down)
served with the Irish Guards. He died some time ago. Unfortunately he and my grandmother split up (about 1940s I believe) and consequently no-one kept even a photo of him. I know he was at Caterham, and my mother talks of seeing him on parade in London too. I will find out more details, as perhaps one of your guests will have a group photo with him in. My brothers and I would at least like to know what he looked like. Thank you for providing such an excellent site Kay Gardner |

| Ivor, You have created a grand web site for friends of the Regiment. Thank you for doing so. I have not had the honor of serving in the Micks, but do have the good fortune of being an Honorary Member of the London Branch of the Association since 1993. Have had a keen interest in the Irish Guards, especially the Pipes, even prior to my service with the U.S. Army. Would enjoy hearing from any current or ex piper who has the inclination. As part of some research I have been conducting, would be particularly interested in photos of pipers from the 1950s and '60s. |

| Dear Ivor On holiday in Ireland this year I was looking through a junk shop a few miles outside Galway when I came across a Irish Guards Photogragh. This Photo is very impresive & I would think it is a Regimental one, I will now discribe it. firstly it is 40 inches High by 33 inches wide, The subject is a Irish Wolfhound & Bandsman on a parade ground. On the top of the photo is a embossed Irish Guards Cap Star At the bottom of the photo is printed "LEITRIM BOY" 1st Battalion Irish Guards. Given to the Regiment by Viscount Powerscourt MVO. The photogragh was taken by Galor Potensul Photograghers Aldershot. All this is in a very nice oak frame. I enquired where this photo came from the fella told me he had bought it from a pub that was being demolished and it had been hung there as long as anyone could recall Iam wondering if you could through any light on this photo and would your R H Q at Wellington Barracks would have any record of it. I would most gratefull if you could help me with this I remain yours faithfully Ray Smith Ex Scots Guards P.S I must add there was a brass plate at the bottom of this photo but sadly it has been removed RAY: I have tried to reply to this message but there is a problem with your E-mail address. Please advise me at ivor@irish-guards.co.uk |

| As ex Navy and website designer I found your
website a great tribute to the Irish Guards. www.uk-new-media.co.uk |
| I came upon this site purely by chance. I was
looking for information on the Irish Guards. I'm a family Historian and needed
informatin on the Regiment. My late father James Thornbury served in the Irish
Guards from 1933-1962 I knew nothing of were he served or what he did during the war. All I have are childhood memories of the Guards depot in Caterham. Your web site facinated me I am most impressed everything I needed to know was available. Most of it was due to your hard work I also found two photos of my late father in the gallery. I have enclosed a photo of dad in the desert I think it may have been taken during the war. Thank you for all the hard work. To anyone who knew our family hello to you all. There are four of us living here in New Zealand one in Canada and another in America. Warm Regards Kate Shirley Nee Thornbury |
| I am the Hon. secretary of the London Branch Welsh Guards Associastion, my connection with the micks, apart from my surname is that my father in law was L/Sgt George Byrne, and my brother in law is Mick Kinane, ex GSM Colchester (but we keep him in the dark)! An excellent web site. |
| My father was Walter Hearne, and he was in the
Irish Guards from 1937 until 1945, Serving in Eygpt Dunkirk Paris Does anybody remember him ? His nick names were Wally, Watty and Chap. |
